Improving heart health should be an important goal for all adults. Your senior loved one will want to pay close attention to how she can make some changes in how she prioritizes her heart health. Even small changes can have some big benefits.
Adjust Her Diet
One of the easiest changes that anyone can make for health benefits is their diet. Your senior doesn’t have to go overboard with a complete overhaul of her diet in order to get big benefits, however. Simply making a few small changes, like adding more fruits and vegetables to her diet, can give her big results. It’s a good idea for her to check with her doctor about her current diet and get ideas for changes she can start to make. Senior home care professionals can be a huge help when making dietary changes.
Get Better Sleep
Sleep is often overlooked when anyone is trying to make positive health changes. But looking into what is causing your senior to have trouble getting quality sleep can make a huge difference in how she feels every day. Addressing things like sleep hygiene issues, comfort problems at night, and any health issues that might interfere with sleeping helps to ensure that your senior gets enough quality sleep consistently.
Reduce Stress
Stress is terrible for people of any age, but if your senior is concerned about her heart health, she needs to make a concerted effort to reduce her stress levels. Home care assistance can do quite a lot to help your senior loved one with this goal. If there are tasks at home that are becoming more challenging for her, she can hand those over to someone else. This gives her more time to focus on activities that reduce stress and otherwise improve her health.
Increase Physical Activity
As long as her doctor clears her to exercise more, this is definitely something that should be on her list. Just like dietary changes, increasing physical activity slowly and in a way that feels comfortable for your senior is going to give her the best results. Her doctor can give her ideas for moving more that work with her health needs, but it’s also a good idea for her to try different activities to see which ones she likes best.
Know Her Risk Factors and Heart Numbers
Understanding her risk factors for heart disease and other heart issues is essential if your senior loved one wants to keep her heart as healthy as possible. Tracking specific metrics, like blood pressure levels, can help your senior to understand how well she’s doing with her goals related to heart health. If this is something that she finds tricky to do, home care assistance can remind your senior to keep up with those details.
Much of heart disease and heart-related illnesses involves genetic risk factors and other variables that your senior can’t do much about. But focusing on the risk factors that she can control can help her to feel more involved in her health journey.
