At the end of life, senior patients need comfort, support, and dignity in order to get through the complicated feelings they’re going to experience. They also need practical help to manage symptoms and deal with the medical challenges they’re facing. Hospice care can offer that assistance, both for patients and their family members.
Here are just a few of the major benefits of taking advantage of hospice care as soon as possible.
24/7 On-call Support
One of the biggest reasons seniors choose hospice care is the 24/7 support it offers. By the time seniors are near the end of life, they are dealing with many symptoms and may be uncomfortable a lot of the time. Having care providers there around the clock ensures that someone is there in the event of an emergency and that continuous monitoring is going on.
Comprehensive Symptom Management
Symptoms get complicated at the end of life. What previously worked to manage symptoms like pain and shortness of breath may no longer be effective. Additional techniques that weren’t an option when seniors were trying curative therapies may also be available now. Hospice care can find creative and effective ways to help seniors experience greater comfort.
Holistic Care
Hospice care doesn’t consider people as a set of symptoms or a condition. Hospice care assesses what the whole person and family need during this trying time. It can address not only physical issues but also emotional, social, and spiritual needs. This helps aging adults have a better experience as they move closer to the end of life.
Medical Equipment Delivery and Assistance
When seniors are at the end of life, they often need access to equipment that makes life easier. That’s especially true if they’re planning to stay at home as long as they can. Hospice care can provide hospital beds, wheelchairs, oxygen equipment, and all sorts of other types of medical equipment based on the patient’s needs.
Emotional Support
The end of someone’s life is an emotional time, both for that person and for the other people who care about that individual. Hospice care helps families find the emotional support they need to cope with what is happening. Bereavement support, anticipatory grief support, and other types of emotional assistance are all available.
Respite Care
Families have a lot going on, and often, what falls by the wayside first is rest. When hospice care services are available for seniors, family caregivers can take respite time when they need it. They can return to caregiving after taking a break, knowing that their seniors are in good hands when they return.
Hospice care offers a compassionate, complete approach to caring for seniors at the end of life. The various methods of assistance they receive might change periodically depending on needs, but the care and support that hospice offers are the same for everyone.
