In February, we celebrate National Senior Independence Month, a time to recognize the importance of helping seniors maintain their freedom and quality of life. For many aging adults, one of the biggest challenges to independence is the lack of reliable senior transportation and home care services.
Losing the ability to drive or access transportation can severely impact their ability to make decisions and take action for themselves. Whether due to medical, financial, or logistical reasons, limited transportation options can have a significant negative effect on a senior’s well-being and overall quality of life.
Lack of Senior Transportation and Home Care Can Lead to Serious Challenges
For adults who have always had the freedom to drive, it’s hard to imagine life without that option. However, for many seniors, losing the ability to drive can create significant challenges.
Without reliable senior transportation and home care services, daily tasks become frustrating and even dangerous. That’s where services like home care can make a difference, ensuring seniors have the support they need to stay safe and independent.
Some possible negative outcomes for those who cannot find a ride when they need it:
- Important doctor and dentist appointments are missed, increasing the possibility of important health concerns being missed.
- Social events are impossible to attend, increasing feelings of isolation and loneliness.
- Shopping is limited, making buying the right foods or grooming items difficult and possibly more expensive by having to use delivery.
- Emergency evacuations become even more stressful if your loved one has a household danger to escape or a serious weather event to prepare for.
Senior Transportation and Home Care Options for Seniors Who Don’t Drive
Luckily, even if your senior lives alone and cannot drive anymore, there are plenty of senior transportation and home care options for seniors that can help them keep their independence in February and all year.
Home Care Services
Many home care providers can help with transportation needs for your senior. The benefits of using a senior transportation and home care provider are that your senior can have mobility assistance if she needs it from her doorstep to wherever she is going, and she’ll always have a trusted driver.
Ride-Share Services
From taxis to services like Uber and Lyft, your senior can request a driver any time during the day or night. This option is often expensive, and your loved one will need to walk out to the driver, but it’s a good option for an emergency trip where she can’t arrange for a driver beforehand.
Public Transportation
The best news about public transportation is that it’s always reliable and always goes to the same place simultaneously for a very low price. It can be great for weekly grocery store trips if your loved one doesn’t buy too much. It’s also best for seniors who are still very comfortable getting around independently.
Para-Transit Services
If your loved one needs help with getting around, she might qualify for para-transit services through the Americans with Disabilities Act. If your loved one town offers this service and she qualifies, just remember to plan ahead. They are often hard to book because of demand.
Volunteer Ride Services
Check into organizations around your senior that may have volunteers willing to drive your senior to and from appointments.
Taking care of your loved one’s senior transportation and home care needs is just one way to celebrate National Senior Independence Month.
