“I just don’t like food anymore.” Chuck, a remarkable 97-year-old and longtime client, shared those words with us. His goal immediately touched our hearts: he wants to celebrate his 100th birthday. But like many older adults, he faces an often unexpected challenge—food no longer tastes good.
At first glance, this may sound like a matter of preference. In reality, it can become a serious health concern.
When older adults lose interest in eating, they often take in fewer calories, less protein, and fewer essential nutrients. Over time, this can lead to weight loss, muscle loss, weakness, falls, slower healing, and even hospitalization. For many seniors, good nutrition is every bit as important as taking prescribed medications.
Why Does Food Taste Different as We Age?
One lesser-known change that comes with aging is the gradual decline of taste and smell. By their 70s and 80s, many people have far fewer functioning taste buds than they had earlier in life. Medications, chronic illnesses, dental problems, dry mouth, and changes in smell can further reduce the enjoyment of eating.
Foods that once tasted delicious may suddenly seem bland, metallic, or simply unappealing.
When a senior says, “Nothing tastes good anymore,” they may be describing a real physical change—not simply being picky.
We Decided to Become Our Own Focus Group
At A Passion for Care, we believe recommendations should come from experience whenever possible.
Instead of simply handing clients a list of nutritional supplements, we turned our office into a temporary smoothie laboratory.
Our team gathered around the conference table with nutritional drinks, fresh fruit, yogurt, peanut butter, cinnamon, frozen berries, and a blender. We prepared recipe after recipe, tasting each one and discussing flavor, texture, and overall appeal.
There was plenty of laughter along the way, but our purpose was serious.
Our question was not, “Which supplement is the most nutritious?”
It was:
“Which recipe would someone actually enjoy enough to finish?”
Because that is the one that can truly make a difference.
And the Winner Was…
After sampling numerous combinations, one recipe quickly became the unanimous favorite.
🏆 The A Passion for Care Signature Smoothie
- 1 bottle Chocolate Ensure Max Protein
- ½ frozen banana
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter
- Dash of cinnamon
- Ice (as desired)
The verdict?
It tasted far more like a rich chocolate milkshake than a nutritional supplement.
The banana softened the aftertaste, the peanut butter added creamy richness, and the cinnamon rounded out the flavor. Even those of us who do not regularly drink nutritional supplements agreed we would happily enjoy this one again.
Nutrition Is About More Than Calories
We also discussed something families often overlook.
Success isn’t simply asking:
“Did Mom drink her nutritional shake?”
Instead, we encourage caregivers to become what we call Nutrition Detectives.
Observe what works.
- Was it served ice cold?
- Did they prefer chocolate over vanilla?
- Was it more enjoyable as a smoothie?
- Did they finish more while visiting with family?
- Did they prefer several small servings instead of one large bottle?
These small observations can be the key to significantly improving nutrition.
A Small Change Can Make a Big Difference
Sometimes it is not another medication.
Sometimes it is not another doctor’s appointment.
Sometimes it’s discovering that a nutritional drink tastes wonderful when blended with banana, peanut butter, and a touch of cinnamon.
For someone hoping to regain strength after an illness, recover from surgery, remain independent at home, or reach an exciting milestone birthday, that small discovery can become an important part of the journey.
At A Passion for Care, we believe caring means paying attention to the little things that can make a very big difference. An afternoon filled with science, compassion, and a bit of fun gave us something useful to share—because every sip is another opportunity to help someone live healthier, stronger, and more independently.
