It’s that time of year again, when you should be thinking about what yearly checkups your senior parent needs and making sure they have appointments scheduled. In addition to routine medical exams, your senior parent should also have additional checkups to address any recent health changes.
Preventive care and early detection of potential illnesses can make a significant difference for your senior parent, so routine checkups shouldn’t be put off. Scheduling all of these appointments at once can help ensure you don’t miss important checkups.
If you aren’t able to take enough time off work to take your parent to all their checkups, in-home care can help. With in-home care, your parent will have someone they trust to take them to their appointment, check them in, and get them home safely.
Checkups Your Senior Parent Needs
In-home care providers can help get your senior loved one to medical appointments, social events, and other activities. Your senior parent should have a thorough medical checkup at least once a year. And they should also have these important checkups and screenings:
Vision Screening
A yearly vision screening is important for older adults, even if they already wear glasses. As people age, their eyesight can change quickly. Eye exams help check for common conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. These problems can start slowly and may not cause pain at first.
Good vision is also about safety. Poor eyesight increases the risk of falls, car accidents, and difficulty reading medication labels. An eye doctor can update prescriptions, check intraocular pressure, and assess the overall health of the eyes. If your parent has diabetes or high blood pressure, vision checks are even more important because those conditions can damage the eyes over time.
Hearing Screening
Hearing loss is common in older adults, but it often goes unnoticed. An annual hearing screening can detect small changes before they become significant problems. Trouble hearing can lead to frustration, social isolation, and safety risks, such as missing alarms or traffic.
Hearing loss is also linked to memory problems and depression. When someone cannot hear well, they may avoid conversations or misunderstand others. A simple hearing test can show whether hearing aids or other treatments would help. Even mild hearing loss is worth addressing early.
Dental Cleaning and Exam
Many people think dental care matters less as they get older, but the opposite is true. Seniors should have a dental cleaning and exam at least once a year, and often twice a year if possible. Gum disease, tooth decay, and mouth infections are common and can affect overall health.
Poor oral health is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and trouble eating healthy foods. A dentist can check for cavities, gum problems, loose teeth, and signs of oral cancer. Regular cleanings also help prevent pain and tooth loss, which can make eating and speaking harder.
Cognitive Exam
An annual cognitive exam helps assess memory, thinking, and problem-solving skills. This does not mean your parent has dementia. These exams set a baseline so doctors can notice changes over time.
Early signs of memory problems are easy to miss. A cognitive exam can catch issues early, when treatment, planning, and lifestyle changes can have the greatest impact. It also helps families understand what is normal aging and what is not. These exams are usually short and can be done during a regular doctor visit.
Cancer Screenings
Cancer screenings are an important part of yearly care for seniors. Common screenings include tests for breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, and skin cancer. Which screenings are needed depends on age, health history, and the doctor’s advice.
Screenings help find cancer early, when it is easier to treat. Even if your parent feels fine, these tests can catch problems before symptoms appear. A doctor can help determine which screenings remain appropriate and how often they should be performed.
